MORE than 1000 social housing residents on the northern beaches will be able to rate the workers doing maintenance jobs in a TripAdvisor-style system to be launched today.
Social Housing Minister and Wakehurst MP Brad Hazzard said the Tenant Experience Dashboard was “born out of the lessons I have learned as an MP”.
Mr Hazzard said he was trying to address the frustration “that a lot of tenants have expressed to me”.
There are more than 126,000 social housing properties in NSW, 1326 of which are on the peninsula.
The scheme would allow tenants in areas such as Narraweena and Dee Why to rate contractors on a scale of one to five.
“Years ago, the Manly Daily carried a story about a particular public housing tenant who couldn’t even get a toilet replaced for 20 weeks,” Mr Hazzard said.
“When I intervened all that time ago, I thought when I could get in a position to make a difference I am going to have a way for tenants to address issues.”
This system “puts the tradies on notice, but most importantly it puts the companies who have the contracts for various districts on notice”, Mr Hazzard said.
“We recently let the contracts on each of the districts and there is a condition that empowers the Government to terminate the contract unless they are doing a good job.”
He said he hoped it would improve conditions of people in social housing.
“This is about respecting social housing tenants and respecting the fact that they are entitled to have good service,” he said.
The ratings will become live on the Family and Community Services website today.
