The northern beaches’ best cuisine is Italian. And, more specifically, it is Sardinian food.

Delicious magazine’s Top 100 NSW restaurant guide, published in the Sunday Telegraph, rates Pilu at Freshwater as the peninsula’s best, ranking it as the 33rd best restaurant in the state.

Restaurateur Giovanni Pilu said that recognition of his “little slice of Italian joy” created greater awareness for the restaurant.

“It makes a difference — it doesn’t necessarily convert to an increase in immediate bookings,” he said.

Pilu was the top restaurant on the northern beaches.

“But it creates a greater awareness of the restaurant and is fabulous publicity.”

Summer was a busy time for the beachfront fine-diner, he said. For more casual food, the next door beach-bar, Barretto, will have extended hours.

Two of Alessandro Pavoni’s Italian eateries make the coveted list. Ormeggio, his fine-dining establishment at The Spit, is one position behind Pilu, at No. 34.

This summer the restaurant has two specialised menus. One is a tapas-style, Spanish- influenced degustation. The other showcases a collection of the kitchen’s most iconic dishes over the past eight years.

There is also a weekend five-course degustation called Stressless Sundays.

Pavoni’s Newport woodfired trattoria, Sotto Sopra, is his second entry in the guide and makes the list at No. 92.

There’s only one Manly restaurant featured in the guide. The Bistro at Manly Pavilion at No. 86.

Tuscan-born Andrea Corsi came on board midyear as executive chef and has tweaked the edges of the menu, adding his own Italian touches.

Summer dining with Harbour views includes egg fettuccine with spanner crab and spinach and ricotta gnudi with fresh basil.

The top restaurant overall was Fred’s, a 60-seat Merivale venture in Paddington.
