Tony Abbott is on course to lose Warringah, according to new polling.
The GetUp commissioned poll of 805 people conducted at the beginning of this month indicates Mr Abbott’s primary vote is down to 38 per cent.
By comparison, in 2016 he won the seat with 51.6 per cent of the primary vote.
The polling shows Zali Steggall is on course to win with the Independent leading Mr Abbott 56-44 on a two party-preferred basis.
This suggests Mr Abbott has slipped further behind: A poll conducted in February had Ms Steggall at 54 to Mr Abbott's 46.
The poll was conducted by Lonergan Research.
GetUp said the polling indicates what its members were hearing on the doorstep.
GetUp’s campaign director Miriam Lyons said 600 members had knocked on 20,000 doors in Warringah and made 100,000 phone calls to residents.
“People in Warringah are demanding action on climate change like never before,” she said.
“It’s clear our climate can’t afford another 25 years of Tony Abbott, this election Warringah will be voting for climate leadership.”
She said polling shows the top issue for voters in the electorate is climate change with the economy in second place.
Despite the recent polling bookmakers still have Mr Abbott as favourite. Tab has Mr Abbott at $1.42 and Ms Steggall at $2.50.
Mr Abbott has been contacted for comment.
