A popular Sydney hotel owned by pub tsar Justin Hemmes has been badly damaged in an early morning blaze on Tuesday.
Five Fire and Rescue NSW brigades were called to the The Newport, on the northern beaches, after multiple triple zeros calls were made just after 7am reporting massive amounts of smoke.
Firefighters found the kitchen of the “Vinnie’s Pizza” pavilion in the beer garden at the pub that used to be called The Newport Arms in Kalinya St, Newport, well alight.
Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman Adam Dewberry said the fire was concentrated around the pizza oven.
“The fire was quickly put under control,” Superintendent Dewberry said.
“Brigades were called out from Mona Vale, Avalon, Narrabeen, Dee Why and Forestville after reports of a large volume of smoke coming from the premises.
“There was severe damage to inside of timber structure with a metal roof, with a pizza oven, in the beer garden.”
No one was injured.
The main part of the hotel was not damaged. The Vinnie’s Pizza kiosk was scheduled to open at midday today.
Management at The Newport has been contacted for comment.
