Northern beaches foodies are on alert after plans for a Japanese raw seafood bar have been revealed.
A development application for the two-level “Get Sashimi” eatery near Manly Beach has been submitted to Northern Beaches Council and is now open for public submissions.
With two outlets already popular with diners at Bondi and Coogee beaches, the owners of what they describe as “Sydney’s first sashimi bar” want to set up in the former Billabong surfwear store on The Corso, which closed in early 2021.
The owner, 25-year-old seafood industry entrepreneur, Antonio Muollo, wants to install a counter and display cases on the ground floor, to be filled with more than 90 sushi and sashimi options. It will have seating for four diners.
An upstairs mezzanine space will be set up for dine-in guests, with seating for 16, according to planning documents.
Mr Muollo, from Dover Heights, opened his first Get Sashimi at Bondi in 2023 as an extension to his super popular GetFish business — a fresh seafood delivery service he established in 2018 when he was just 18.
GetFish, which delivers seafood to private homes and restaurants from the De Costi store at the Sydney Fish Market, has an annual turnover of about $30m.
Last year, Mr Muollo said that the first restaurant “answered one of Sydney’s needs”. Afterwards, he set about expanding his dine-in and takeaway sashimi bar to Coogee, with a future eye on the northern beaches.
“I think Get Sashimi has answered the need as people were looking for something that was health-conscious, quick and easy,” he said.
If it gets the go-ahead, it’s expected that its skilled itamae, or chefs, will work in front of customers, preparing 20 fresh sashimi options including snapper, scallops, tuna, toothfish and abalone.
Sashimi lovers will be able to order from an extensive menu that includes a fresh salmon and tuna “sandwich” as well as mixed sashimi or salmon poke bowls.
At its Biondi and Coogee shopfronts, Get Sashimi offers miso soup and sashimi offerings topped with products like strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.
It also has oysters and sushi options like chicken katsu and avocado rolls.
Mr Muollo said it had been a relief to see Sydney loved seafood as much as he did, especially after shunning university and post-school travel to start his umbrella business, Get Fish, as a teenager.
“I’ve been around fish my whole life,” he told NewsLocal last year.
“As we continue to grow Get Sashimi, we will be opening more stores and looking towards a rapid expansion plan in early 2025, including the northern beaches.”
Trading hours would be restricted to between 6am – 10pm, seven days a week. The Coogee outlet opens between 11am and 9pm.
