A boy, 16, has been charged over an alleged night time home invasion in Terrey Hills where a man was slashed with a machete.

The teenager from western Sydney allegedly broke into the house on Terrigal Rd, alongside a 12-year-old male accomplice, to steal keys to the man’s car.

During a struggle with the teenager the man, who was at home with his wife during the alleged break-in, suffered deep wounds to his hands.

He later needed surgery at Northern Beaches Hospital.

Police allege the teenager, from Blackett near Mount Druitt, and the boy entered the house at about 10pm on February 9 after opening a screen door before they were confronted by the man.

Both boys were described as wearing black clothing and allegedly had their faces partially covered.

The pair allegedly demanded the keys to the man’s car, but he refused to hand them over.

Police allege the man was struck with the machete by the 16-year-old during the scuffle inside the house.

The pair allegedly fled on foot but dropped the machete in the road in front of a house several doors away.

Officers called in a police helicopter and dogs to join the search for the boys.

A police spokesman said the two boys were arrested about five hours later, on February 10, after they were seen sitting at a bus stop in Booralie Rd by a resident.

“The 16 year old was charged with an unrelated matter however there was insufficient evidence at the time to lay charges for the (Terrigal Rd home invasion) offence,” the spokesman said.

However both boys were charged with entering building/land with intent to commit an indictable offence after they were allegedly seen attempting to break into a car parked in a driveway on nearby Cowrang Ave at about 11pm.

Officers from Strike Force Sweetenham, set up by NSW Police to investigate aggravated break, enter and steal offences – especially by suspected young offenders looking to steal high performance and luxury vehicles – took over the home invasion investigation.

Police said that after more evidence was obtained, the 16-year-old was arrested late last week and taken to Mount Druitt Police Station.

He was charged with special aggravated break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence. The teen was refused bail by police and appeared before Parramatta Children’s Court where he was granted conditional bail.

The teen is set to appear again at Parramatta Children’s Court on June 3.
