WEDNESDAY’s hot weather saw plenty of activity of the cooling-down kind as the peninsula sweltered.

At 10am, temperatures hit 37.7C inland at Terrey Hills, with little breeze on the coast to provide relief from the blistering heat.

Dee Why beach was packed with swimmers and sun worshippers enjoying the conditions, which the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed were 10C higher than is typical for this time of year.

Matilda Baxter, 8, along with Amelie Shelley, 8, and Lucy Shelley, 10, headed to Dee Why with their mums, Bec Shelley and Melissa Baxter, to take a dip.

“The kids have been in the water all morning. They would stay here all day if they could. The water is pretty chilly, but it’s so refreshing,” Ms Shelley said.

“We’re staying cool in the shade under a tree — it is pretty unbearable in the sun. We’ve got cool boxes with plenty of water.”

Temperatures are set to hover in the early 20Cs on Thursday.
