Winter Olympics: Laura Peel wins aerial gold, undies star Danielle Scott back racing

It’s called a full-full-full - a triple twisting triple back somersault - and it helped deliver this Winter Olympic Aussie skier a very special medal.

Australian aerial skier Laura Peel has pulled out a series of spectacular triple back somersaults to claim a historic gold at the FIS World Championships in Kazakhstan.

The Canberra skier, with her sights firmly set on the next Winter Olympics, became the first Australian aerial skier to twin two world championship gold medals.

Her success on the slopes came after she won gold in Kreischberg, Austria, back in 2015.

Peel’s most recent success came at the end of a spectacular display which saw her complete one of the most technically difficult jumps ever performed by a woman.

The full-full-full, a triple twisting triple back somersault, scored a massive 106.46 points to set up Peel’s win.

Just missing a medal was Australian teammate Danielle Scott who also performed high scoring triple somersaults as she upped the ante in her comeback to the slopes.

“Honestly the second time feels even better”, said Peel after stepping off the podium.

“My qualification jumps were not my best, but I saved my best for the final, it’s only the second time I have competed that jump, I am so happy to put it down.”

Peel currently leads the World Cup standings with 410 points.

UNDIES STAR DANIELLE SCOTT’S AERIAL SKI COMEBACK

Australian skier Danielle Scott has made a stunning return to aerial ski competition with a gold medal in her first major event since the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in February.

The 30-year-old northern beaches athlete claimed gold in the Deer Valley aerials World Cup in the US.

Scott, a former gymnast, is a multiple Winter Olympian and world championship and World Cup medals winner.

Her latest success was her fourth World Cup victory and the 11th time she has made the podium.

The Sydney skier racked up 90.59 points with her back double full-full (a triple twisting double back somersault) for her win in her comeback for a long break from the sport and ACL surgery.

“I am beside myself, this is crazy, it’s been a long time since competing and I love this sport and this is probably the best welcome back ever,’’ Scott said.

“Today was good, it was interesting with the conditions, but I started off training really well, put down a good qualifying jump, continued on with training and finals and put down everything I needed to.

“This is a good confidence boost for the world championships next month, this is obviously my first competition back so I needed that and I am really excited for what’s ahead.”

The next Winter Olympics are now in less than a year in Beijing.
