THE Manly Sapphires experienced grand final heartbreak on Wednesday night, losing their decider 50-49 against minor premiers Sutherland.

In what was an absorbing contest at Homebush in front of a capacity crowd, the quality of netball reflected what was on the line.

Manly coach Jen Wright said the agonising defeat would motivate the squad ahead of the 2017 state league season.

“Sutherland are a very polished side who have played together for a number of years,’’ she said.

“It came down to the final minute. We pegged one goal back but unfortunately couldn’t send the game into extra time.

“Most of the girls will be back next year. I’m sure they won’t forget this result in a hurry.”

Former NSW Swifts player Brooke Miller had a tough night on court.

“She is one of our go-to players and Sutherland recognised that,’’ Wright said.

“They did a good job containing her.”

Wright singled out Sapphires centre Nikki Deegenaars for praise.

“She was carrying an injury but soldiered on,’’ she said.

“Nikki is such a great leader and the team matched her enthusiasm.

“This year we have developed a fantastic culture in the squad and we will look to build on that in pre-season.”

The Manly team was: Georgia Marshall, Lauren Cantwell, Brooke Miller, Nikki Deegenaars, Victoria Low, Eliza Long and standout Queenscliff teenager Teigan O’Shannassy.
