ICE cool Warringah Rats skipper Hamish Angus has earnt his spot in the folklore surrounding the local derby with Manly by booting a pressure conversion to seal his side’s 17-16 win over their archrivals on Saturday.

In front of a pulsating crowd nudging 7000, Warringah recorded scored their first victory at Manly Oval since 2007 and ended Manly’s impressive nine-game winning streak.

Trailing 16-10 with six minutes to go Rats’ replacement hooker Rob Kelly crashed over a try, leaving Angus with a conversion attempt from wide out to give his side the lead in his return game after five weeks on the sideline.

“Last I was chatting to (assistant coach) Ed Doyle and said in my career at the Rats I’ve never had a kick to win the game,” Angus said.

“Sure enough, you say that and then you get one from the sideline.

“Off the boot I thought it was good and it was tailing left a lift bit and it was getting close to that left post but it snuck in.”

Angus said he could not ignore the noise from the Manly fans from the moment he started lining up the kick.

“I quite enjoy it, that’s what you do the job for to have an influence on the game,” Angus said.

“And you see how much it means to everyone in the stands, they have an opportunity to try and influence the result.”
