WHILE the Sea Eagles navigate their way through a crisis involving coach Trent Barrett, co-owner Scott Penn has assured supporters that the club is still strong.

“We know where we want to be and we are working very hard behind the scenes to get there — and we will get there,” Penn said.

“2019 will be a far better season and we are doing everything we can to make sure of it.”

Penn said once the club’s appeal against the heavy fines for alleged salary cap breaches is resolved they will then know hoe much space they have and will be able to get into the player market.

He said the issue has gone on longer than they ever anticipated.

“Hopefully there is some concession there and it will allow us to get out and start looking,” he said.

“The fact is we are very happy with the current squad,” he said.

Penn said that Barrett will be in charge of the team for Sunday’s game against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

“We are endeavouring to find a solution as quickly as we can give everyone certainty coming into the new season,” Penn said.

“There is no immediate fix, we can’t put a time frame on it at this point.”

Penn said the fact was that Barrett is theoretically under contract until July next season.

“But he has signalled his intent so on that basis we need to start looking at who is out there in the market,” he said.

“We have certainly had some preliminary sounding out but it is still very early.”
