THIS is the gift of life that is inspiring Sea Eagles prop Lloyd Perrett as he prepares for the 2019 NRL season.
Since he and his wife Shelly have welcomed their daughter Nora into the world on October 30, Perrett has gained a whole new perspective and appreciation of what is important.
“Everyone used to say it will change your life and you don’t know how true that is until it actually happens to you,” the doting dad told the Manly Daily.
“I actually appreciate everything a little bit more and it gives you a bit more motivation because now I’m in charge of raising a little one.
“And it my duty to show her the world and give her the best opportunity I can.”
Nora’s arrival has even more significance for Perrett because 12 months previously doctors told him he was seconds from death after suffering heatstroke and being rushed to Mona Vale Hospital.
“The very first day back at training I got severely dehydrated and passed out and apparently had a seizure,” Perrett said.
“It was probably a blessing in disguise having heatstroke.
“I have learnt a few things about my body … I’ve learnt my body doesn’t regulate certain things very well and now I know how to combat that.”
Then halfway through last season Perrett suffered another setback when he was told the club was happy for him to leave even though he had another year to run on his contract.hys
He admits at the time those issues rocked him emotionally, mentally and physically.
“There were points there when I thought I just don’t enjoy football,” he said.
“Now I’m feeling awesome and I’m just looking forward to ripping in this year.
“I’m happier because all that chaos I had last year is behind me.
“I am very excited about this year, I am I’m excited the direction the club is going in with Des and his coaching.
“I just think going through what I did last year made me appreciate the opportunities I had.
“I’ve got the attitude I’m off contract so I’ve got to be myself and do my best. Having the baby adds to that motivation.”
Perrett said no matter what team he is playing in he will be working his hardest trying to be the best player on the field.
“That has been what has worked for me in the past and I know everything else will come off the back of it,” he said.
