Medical student’s studies aren’t interfering with talent on pitch

TAYLOR Beatty is one of those blokes you cannot help but admire.

Talented and humble are words which best describe him.

Not only is he a member of Manly’s first XI, he is equally talented away from the cricket pitch.

The 22-year-old is studying medicine at Sydney University and for the moment is happy to juggle both.

“I’ve always craved balance in my life and cricket provides that,” the Clontarf resident told the Manly Daily.

“I’m in my first year (of medicine) and so far, so good, it isn’t as time consuming as I expected it to be.

“Obviously, over the next few years my (uni) workload will increase, and that’s fine, at the end of the day I want to make a difference in life.”

Beatty already has one degree to his name, completing a chemistry course last year.

He felt “working in a lab” was not his life goal, so he chose to look long-term.

“I remember after finishing school I played cricket full time in the United Kingdom, and while I enjoyed it, I wanted to give back more away from sport,” he said.

“My pre-season has had its challenges but I can’t wait for round one this weekend.”

Beatty is an all-rounder, a handy middle to lower-order batsman who also has the ability to swing the ball as a pace bowler.

He has been in and out of first grade after making his debut as an 18-year-old, and if he has his way, second XI cricket will not be a regular theme over the next few months.

“We have plenty of depth at the club so I need to perform in every game possible,” he said.

“The coaching staff have shown plenty of faith in me so I am keen to repay them.”

Play this Saturday in the one-dayer against Eastern Suburbs begins at 9.30am, with Graham Reserve the confirmed venue due to the poor state of Manly Oval.
