Sydney surf gun Lizzie Welborn has expressed shock at racing onto the podium for the second time in a fortnight in the Nutri-Grain ironwoman series at Bulli as Queensland foe Lana Rogers extended her lead overall and her winning run to three events.
Welborn, who lives at Maroubra but competes for Newport, has moved up into fourth place overall on the series pointscore with her second place at the end of three short course races at Bulli.
While delighted with her result Welborn was in awe of Rogers who kicked off her season with a win at the Coolangatta Gold before adding another in round two of the professional ironwoman series at Burleigh Heads two weeks ago.

SEVENS HEAVEN: How rugby saved this teenager
“Everyone wants to beat her (Lana) but its not often someone wins three events in a row like her. It’s pretty awesome,’’ Welborn said.
“It was really awesome racing here, good conditions, the results were up and down and Ipm a little shocked I got a second again.
“I was pretty nervous coming into the round.’’
Welborn said her enjoyment in training is reflected in her racing form.
“I’m just really enjoying the sport right now and my training at Newport is really coming along nicely,’’ she said.
“I’m just going out there and trying to be consistent.’’
Northern beaches surf life saver Georgia Miller, now based on the Gold Coast for training, finished third in the race and is now second overall behind Rogers.
But Miller was less than happy with her performance.
“I stuffed up in the last race,’’ said the defending series champion.
“I made a mistake at the start of the ski and really had to fight my way back.’’
Earlier Queensland Country Canecutters won the opening round of the Super Surf Teams League at Bulli from Scarborough Sunsets and the Northern Beaches Rays.
The second round of the Super Surf Teams League will be at Surfers Paradise on December 15.
