LACHLAN WARD has been remembered as a genuine hero after going to the aid of a woman who was involved in a head-on car crash.
The 24-year-old who died after he collapsed while playing for the Warringah Rats fifth grade rugby team last Saturday was not only a special son, brother and friend, it has now emerged he was also a white knight after the nasty accident in Wahroonga.
Among the tributes that flooded into the Ward family on social media after Lachlan’s death were the moving words from the woman who was a victim in the nasty smash.
“I just found out on tonight’s news my hero Lachlan Ward has left us. I am so sad and can’t believe it,” the woman said.
“He helped me when I had my head on car accident! An absolute top bloke with a big heart.
“My sincere condolences to his family and friends, he will be truly missed!”
Lachlan’s brother Sam said the woman and her family were so grateful for what he did after the accident two months before his death.
“I feel like a lot of people might just cruise by,” Sam said. “But Lachie pulled over and rescued her from her car and looked after her.”
And Sam said Lachlan’s actions were just typical of his brother.
“He was just a special guy, he would go out of his way for anyone,” Sam said.
“He was so thoughtful and had such a big heart.
“He built our family home for us so we are very thankful for that.”
Sam, the Warringah first grade backrower, said Lachlan was a larger than life character who never did things in half measures.
”He ran his own race and he had this amazing ability for people to remember him even if it was for the good, the bad or the ugly,” Sam said.
“He left that little imprint on everybody.”
Sam said he and his family have received so much support since the last Saturday.
“We are having good moments and bad moments — having laughs and big cries,” he said.
“I think we are all just a bit scared of life without Lach.”
A memorial service will be held for Lachlan next Thursday, June 22, at C3 Church Auditorium in Oxford Falls at 2pm.
His wake will follow at Rat Park club house.
