Coach Trent Barrett today announced that the 27-year-old would be stepping up to fill the big shoes left by the retirement of champion centre Jamie Lyon.

“I really was quite surprised when Trent told me,’’ Cherry-Evans said.

“There was such a large group of players to choose from and I’m really quite chuffed that it’s me that’s going to lead this side into really good days I believe.

“I love this club and I certainly am proud to lead out such a strong group of men and an outstanding football team this year.”

Local junior Jake Trbojevic has been appointed his deputy,

The new leadership team take over as the has undergone a big overhaul since last season with Barrett describing the appointments as part of a brand new era at the club.

“Daly has been a standout during our pre-season,” Barrett said.

“He is a natural leader and was an obvious choice for us as our next captain.”

“Jake is our vice-captain and being only 22-years-old, the experience he will gain in this role alongside Daly gives us a long two long term leaders who can take this club to where it needs to be,” Barrett said.

Sea Eagles Chairman and owner Scott Penn has given the appointments his seal of approval.

“Daly has always shown leadership qualities, even back in his early days as captain of the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles,” Penn said.

“His experience playing in two grand finals will be invaluable as he leads the team in 2017.

“Having signed Daly to a long-term contract last year, he was always in our thoughts as a future captain and his commitment to 2017 pre-season training has further justified our decision.

“We look forward to a positive 2017 with our outstanding leaders in Daly and Jake.”
