BRENDAN Cholakian went from villain to hero in Sunday’s 2-1 victory against Rockdale, scoring the winner six minutes from time to lift Manly United into third spot with the finals looming.

The Manly United captain missed a penalty in the first half but his late effort from distance secured three precious points in a contest the home side shaded at the Ilinden Sports Centre.

A goal by Manly junior Dylan Macallister set the tone for Rockdale after nine minutes, only to see United striker Richie Cardozo level proceedings with 39 minutes on the clock.

Left winger Adam Parkhouse was fouled in the area moments later but Suns keeper David Bradasevic denied Cholakian from the spot with a slick save.

With both teams pushing for a winner, Cholakian’s effort nestled in the bottom right corner.

The United skipper, who was baited by the passionate crowd all game, celebrated accordingly with his teammates but the joyous scene almost led to a crazy equaliser seconds later.

With the entire Manly team on one side of the pitch, referee Kris Griffiths Jones restarted play.

Thankfully for Paul Dee’s men, the hosts failed to capitalise from the clear run on goal.

Macallister then had a late chance but it wasn’t to be for the home side after his shot was blocked.

“With third spot on the line we knew how important it was to win this match,’’ Cholakian said after the final whistle.

“To score the winner in such a big game was an incredible feeling.”
