Spaceballs movie sequel seen filming on North Head
Film trucks have invaded Sydney’s North Head as a multimillion-dollar film production brings a beloved cult space comedy back to movie screens.
Filming of a multimillion dollar Hollywood blockbuster movie has bounced into Manly.
A location shoot for Spaceballs 2, the long-anticipated sequel to the hit 1987 cult Star Wars spoof, Spaceballs, has been in full swing on North Head.
A cluster of film trucks, vans and catering vehicles in the film’s “unit base” set up in the Barracks Precinct this week.
And movie vehicles have also been parked along the top of Darley Rd, near the old Manly Hospital site.
Signs directing extras and how to find parking for the crew have been placed at the start of Bluefish Rd.
It is understood swampland and bush areas in a section of Sydney Harbour National Park on North Head were used in the shoot.
There was no indication that its stars Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga — who starred in the original movie — Josh Gad, Lewis Pullman or Keke Palmer were on location.
Some shooting for the movie, co-written by comic actor Gad, has already taken place on Turimetta Beach at Warriewood in early October.
Spaceballs, written by US comedy legend Mel Brooks, told the story of space mercenary Lone Starr (Pullman) and his sidekick, Barf — half man, half dog, played by the now deceased John Candy — as they attempt to rescue Princess Vespa (Zuniga) of Planet Druidia from Dark Helmet (Moranis) and his boss, President Skroob (Brooks) of Planet Spaceball.
Planet Spaceball wants to steal the air from the peaceful Druidia, and the heroes must use the mysterious “Schwartz” to complete their mission.
Comedian Gad has uploaded photos to his Instagram account sightseeing in Sydney with some of the cast and crew including Pullman and Zuniga.
Gad, who is also in the cast, said about 50 per cent of the sequel would be shot on location.
“Because it is a Star Wars-esque film, it requires some vista shots, which we’re doing, and it requires some spaceship shots, which we’re doing,” he said at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year.
Spaceballs 2 is set to be released in 2027.
