The $100 million Dee Why RSL redevelopment is progressing — and the Manly Daily has been given a sneak peak behind the scenes.

The new car park, which will provide an extra 200 spaces, is at the heart of the works and is expected to be finished next year.

Hutchinson’s Builders started work in August 2018 and so far more than 55,000 man hours have been put in, equivalent to flying from Sydney to London and back 1220 times.

The new carpark is almost 16 metres below ground level, equivalent to one quarter of the height of Sydney Opera House.

Another key part of the redevelopment will be a sports bar called Battery House.

The venue replaces Flame Lounge & Dining and Cabanas which shut at the end of July 2019.

The Battery House is named after a building that stood in the exact spot of the bar.

It was commissioned in 1927 to provide additional power to the Northern Beaches Tram Network from the batteries stored inside.

The original building also stored Dee Why Surf Lifesaving Club equipment when large surf was threatening the club house in 1950.

Boden Projects was brought in to turn this space into a state-of-the-art sports bar which includes a large main event screen, retractable glass roof, pool tables and a dedicated TAB.

It is due to open in March 2020 along with a bigger and better Flame in late 2020.

“Dee Why RSL is committed to its role as a community hub, bringing people together and providing some of the best food and beverage and entertainment services the Northern Beaches has to offer,” Graeme Liddell, Dee Why RSL club president said.

“We’re investing in the evolution of the Club to do better, and be better, for ourselves, and for the wider community.

“In every way Dee Why RSL will continue to support, celebrate and inspire the local community.

“The redevelopment is part of our new vision for the club — a respectful change that brings us contemporary new spaces and experiences. We are excited to bring this new phase of the club to the wider community, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our 55,000 members and their guests over the past year.”
