Shocking security camera film has emerged showing the moment of impact in a sickening one-punch assault outside a northern beaches pub that left a man with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.
The CCTV footage shows Gerard James Brady, 25, a butcher of Narrabeen, landing a fierce roundhouse blow to the face of Michael Gibb during the melee at the entrance to the Park House at Mona Vale.
Brady told Manly Local Court on Tuesday that he threw the punch in self defence while coming to the aid of his brother-in-law who was involved in a fight with a friend of Mr Gibb’s on October 27.
The butcher and his friends had been out to the Randwick races and had consumed about 10 beers during the day before catching a bus to Mona Vale.
Brady was found guilty to a charge of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm for striking Mr Gibb, 29, from Warriewood.
The CCTV footage, played in court, shows Brady in a white shirt and dark trousers standing close to where a friend of Mr Gibb is being restrained on the ground by pub security staff.
Minutes earlier there had been an altercation between two men in the pub’s beer garden.
Outside the pub Mr Gibb is seen moving closer to Brady, before he is felled by the punch. Mr Gibb reels backwards, loses his footing and strikes his head on the ground.
Brady told the court he punched Mr Gibb because he felt threatened and that he was going to be assaulted after someone grabbed his arm from behind.
“I couldn’t see who it was. I turned around and threw a punch in self defence.”
The court heard that Mr Gibb had no intention of attacking Brady.
As well as a fractured skull, Mr Gibb, suffered bleeding on the brain and had to undergo speech therapy. He also suffered severe headaches and his hearing was affected by the blow.
Mr Gibb had been out celebrating a friend’s birthday.
Magistrate Michelle Goodwin found that the roundhouse punch was an “extremely disproportionate response” by Brady to the actions of Mr Gibb.
“All Mr Gibb did was approach (Brady),” Ms Goodwin said.
Brady, who is on conditional bail, will be sentenced in Manly Local Court on May 2.
