Seiko watches use northern beaches and local social media influencer in ad campaign

Japanese watch giant Seiko has used the northern beaches — and local influencer Alex Hayes — as the stars in an ad campaign for a new range of underwater watches. Find out where it was filmed.

Northern Beaches stars in new Seiko ad

The northern beaches is the spectacular star of a new ad campaign for one of the world’s biggest consumer brands.

Japanese watchmaking giant Seiko has used numerous local locations in a 50-second video to show off its new range of ‘Prospex” diving and adventure watches.

And they used Queenscliff-based surfer, sports action adventurer and influencer, Alex Hayes — who has about 1.1 million social media followers — to star in the clip.

In one of the scenes — all filmed with Hayes, 25, wearing the watch of course — he is seen surfing on a hydrofoil board on a sparkling, northern beaches’ morning.

In another, he plunges into one of our popular ocean pools to do his laps.

Hayes has a go at skateboarding while looking out across the beaches near Warriewood. He flips backwards off rocky cliff and dives into calm, crystal-clear waters.

The athlete is also filmed running along the golden sands of Narrabeen and Collaroy beaches.

Seiko were keen to feature Hayes in the campaign video, which will soon roll out onto screens in stores across Australia, due to his massive and growing social media profile as a sport-based outdoor adventurer.

And the manufacturer can tap into his 448,000 followers on Instagram, 139,000 on Facebook, 160,000 on TikTok and more than 363,000 subscribers on YouTube.

On his sites, the former St Augustine’s College and St Paul’s College student, can be seen parachuting from hot air balloons and helicopters; snowboarding in Canada and; snorkelling with sharks.

Seiko said it had teamed up with a leading men’s lifestyle site in Australia, Man of Many and its production studio, for the Prospex campaign featuring the northern beaches.

Man of Many video producer, Richard Hall, who directed the Seiko Prospex campaign, said “Alex lives for the thrill”.

“When it came time to shoot the Seiko Prospex, a range built on adventure, adrenaline and the ocean, we knew we needed someone who could bring that energy.

“After chatting with Alex and learning he is a Northern Beaches local, there was no other place I’d rather shoot. His connection to the ocean, through conservation and awareness, felt like a natural fit for Seiko and Man of Many.”

Mr Hall said the video was shot over two days.

“Each morning we woke for sunrise and as we had coffee overlooking the ocean, Alex would choose which beach had the best conditions for the next activity. We were spoiled for choice.”

Seiko marketing manager Daniel Findlay told advertising publication B&T that “working with Man of Many and Alex Hayes has exceeded our expectations in terms of producing a campaign that speaks to the heart of the Australian market”.
