A large fire has destroyed a garage at Seaforth containing a 4WD.

NSW Fire and Rescue crews were called to the blaze in the brick two-car garage on MacMillan St just before 9.30am.

Fire officers said there were initial concerns that a man may have been in the building.

But he was not home at the time of the blaze

“We were on the scene by 9.35am and found the garage fully involved in fire,” Fire and Rescue duty commander Bruce Covey said.

“Crews from Manly, Forestville, Dee Why and Mosman were called to the scene and were able to stop it spreading to the main house.”

Inspector Covey said the garage roof had collapsed on to a Toyota four-wheel-drive.

“The fire produced a lot of thick, black smoke,” he said. “People were reporting seeing it kilometres away.

“The garage contained a four-wheel-drive, some car tyres and car parts, as well as tins of paint.

“There was a high fuel load in there and it generated a lot of heat and produced a lot of smoke.”

Shaina, 23, of Davidson told the Manly Daily she was driving on MacMillan St at about 9.30am and noticed the flames.

“There was a garage that backs to the street and it’s separated from the whole house so that was all on fire. There were massive flames you could see from suburbs away and lots of black smoke.”

She painted a chaotic picture of the street as the emergency unfolded.

“There are a lot of tradies out on the road at a building site opposite, they were calling emergency services and about five minutes later there were about four fire trucks and four police cars.

Fire and Rescue confirmed no people were injured in the blaze and the main house was not damaged.

“They’re pulling all the debris out of the garage now, it looks like they’ve got it under control,” Shaina said.

They should be clearing the scene soon, there’s only one police car left, there’s no big flames anymore.

“It doesn’t look like neighbouring properties were damaged, neighbours have been talking to police. It’s a shock because there were a lot of people on the street.

“ It was quite a big scene. There were lots of younger kids around going to school but it has calmed down and people are just trying to get their heads around it.”
