Royal Caribbean Cruises indicates it will appeal Daniel Rawlings threesome compensation verdict

The cruise company that locked an innocent man in his cabin for six days after a consensual threesome with two teenage girls has indicated it will seek an appeal.

Daniel Rawlings says he can “never” return home to Manly despite receiving almost $100,000 in compensation for being wrongfully detained after a consensual threesome due to the global media attention he has received.

The 32-year-old faces an anxious wait after Royal Caribbean indicated they plan to appeal the District Court judgment delivered just prior to Christmas that he be awarded $97,344 in damages.

“Thanks to all the publicity from your industry I can never go back to the northern beaches again,” Mr Rawlings told NewsLocal.

The case attracted international headlines last year as the details of the romp were laid out in court.

Mr Rawlings solicitor, Walker Law Group partner Sharron Vogel, told NewsLocal Royal Caribbean have until February 1 to formally lodge the appeal.

“They indicated as the judgment was handed down, ‘we want a stay, we want an appeal’,” Ms Vogel said.

“We were really happy with the outcome – we felt that it was fair.

“They did accept he hadn’t done anything wrong and we were really satisfied as we felt they acted quite unlawfully.

“What they did wasn’t fair and he suffered a lot because of it psychologically.”

The air conditioner technician was detained in his cabin for six days during a November 2016 Explorer of the Seas cruise from Sydney to Vanuatu where he participated in a consensual threesome with two 18-year-old girls, one of who later accused him of rape.

The matter was investigated but Mr Rawlings was never charged.

A spokeswoman for Royal Caribbean Australia and New Zealand declined to elaborate on the cruise line’s plans.

“We do not comment on pending litigation,” she said.
