THE entire harbourfront at Manly and some streets immediately behind it will be traffic-free on New Year’s Eve to make the 9pm fireworks display safer for families.
As in previous years, The Strand at Dee Why will also be closed to traffic before and after the 9pm fireworks.
In Manly, West Esplanade from Commonwealth Pde to Belgrave St, East Esplanade from Belgrave St to Ashburner St, Belgrave St from Sydney Rd to West Esplanade, West Promenade from Sydney Rd to Gilbert St, Wentworth St from Darley Rd to East Esplanade and Victoria Pde from Darley Rd to East Esplanade will all be closed to traffic between 5pm and 10.30pm.
The Strand at Dee Why will be closed from Oaks Ave to Dee Why Pde between 4pm and 10pm.
The other fireworks displays will be at Rowland Reserve at Bayview at 9pm and midnight.
Northern Beaches Council place manager Mick Darda said the fireworks at Manly, Dee Why and Bayview showed that trying to get into the city to watch the fireworks there isn’t worth the hassle.
“There’s no need for local families to travel into the city to see fireworks, with three locations to choose from and all fireworks free.
“So come early and get a picnic spot with a spectacular fireworks display.
“As the first New Year’s Eve since Northern Beaches Council was formed, the fireworks will celebrate our common values.
“We’d also like to extend a big thank you to local businesses helping to make these fireworks happen.
“Visitors are encouraged to come by foot or (use) public transport.
“Check transportnsw.info for transport options, including ferry timetables. “Additional buses will be available immediately after the events.”
