Review: The Bavarian, Manly Wharf
The Bavarian on Manly Wharf is home to a variety of schnitzels, German beers and great water views
Schnitzels, beer, water views. The Bavarian has the lot. This German-themed eatery is part of Rockpool Dining Group’s trio of big gun venues on Manly Wharf.
And they’re all so different. El Camino Cantina does Tex Mex for the masses, Sake serves contemporary Japanese food in stylish surrounds and The Bavarian is a meat eater’s dream with its menu of hearty, comfort food.
And who doesn’t love a schnitzel? The Bavarian has also been serving them to locals, families and tourists since it opened in 2005.
Three schnitzels have become firm favourites with customers. One is the traditional Wiener schnitzel. This dish features a 200g piece of crumbed, flattened and fried veal, lemon, parsley, capers and a choice of potatoes. The parmigiana is more Italian. Think chicken schnitzel meets pizza as it has mozzarella, tomato sauce and smoked ham.
If that’s still not enough, the Texan could be the answer. This schnitzel is one of the loaded range showcased on menus earlier this year. Three, including the Texan were so popular that they have remained.
The Texan is small fry compared with the six-stack big daddy, The Bavarian’s Schnitzelmeister. The kilo of chicken schnitzels is layered with napoli sauce, ham, cheese and served with four sides. It’s a dish to share.
The brave can attempt the Schnitzelmeister Challenge. rules for a free meal are simple. One diner has to eat the stack in one hour. Few do.
The verdict êêê
The price $32 for all schnitzels, except the S80 Schnitzelmeister
