A RECORD number of humpback whales are set to splash off the northern beaches from today.
From now until November, an estimated 30,000 whales are expected to migrate north, according to Whale Watching Sydney’s Jonas Liebschner.
In the past decade the wildlife photographer said the population of whales had more than doubled — from an average of 12,000 per annum when Liebschner started with the company, which also runs the Manly Fast Ferry.
“What we’ve also noticed is the migration season is now starting and ending just that little bit earlier,” he said.
“It used to go well into the second week of December and now only goes until the end of November.
Liebschner encouraged residents to head to any headland on the northern beaches to see the whales.
Wildlife enthusiasts can also book a tour or cruise with any whale watching service, such as Manly Whale Watching and Manly Ocean Adventures.
“Humpback whales are very acrobatic, pretty friendly and super curious, so they don’t stay too far from the boat if you’re out,” Liebschner said.
