A pair of hungry and curious possums made quite a stir on Tuesday night at Woolworths as shoppers noticed the fury creatures eyeing off fresh produce.

A shopper snapped pictures of the possums about 7.30pm at Narrabeen Woolworths and made light of the situation when she shared the photos on Facebook.

Northern beaches resident Heleen Tol wrote a caption which reads, “Meanwhile at Woolies in Narrabeen.”

It attracted hundreds of comments and reactions on Facebook.

Ms Tol told the Manly Daily it was certainly a rare sighting.

“There were two possums that had entered the store through the roof. I wasn’t shocked but very surprised,” Ms Tol said.

“It was the first time I ever saw possums inside a supermarket. Woolies wasn’t that busy at that time and only three or four customers noticed.

“I was actually surprised that there were a number of other customers who walked by and didn’t notice them at all!”

She said the Woolworths staff became aware and were trying to get hold of them.

“The Woolies team were trying for a while to catch them. I felt a bit sorry for them as this was not an easy project and probably above their pay grade!

“One of the staff members called WIRES but because the possums were not injured WIRES couldn’t assist.

“I left he store before they were caught but as I understand from the comments on Facebook, the team members eventually caught the possums and they were released outside and the produce has been put aside for a WIRES donation and the area was cleaned.”

She said she hopes the possums were fine after the fuss.

“I can only hope the possums were not too stressed out and that they had a chance to have a bit of a banquet before they had to leave. It must have looked like Christmas morning to them.”

A number of residents made comments on the Facebook post, stating the possums were “smart”.

“Little family of happy shoppers but where are their masks,” one Facebook user wrote.

Another person said: “Oh the one checking out the cucumbers is doing all right, yes!”

Woolworths confirmed the situation had been dealt with.

“At Woolworths, we have millions of customers across Australia shop with us every day, but yesterday we had a couple unexpected visitors in our Narrabeen store,” a Woolworths spokeswoman said.

“A pair of possums managed to find their way into our store for a short amount of time. Our team followed protocol and safely caught and moved the animals outdoors without harm.

“The small amount of vegetables the possums came in contact with were removed from shelves immediately and will be donated as feed for local livestock.”
