It may not have the poshest postcode in Sydney, or on the northern beaches, but the salt of the earth suburb of Narraweena now has a fish and chip shop named in an exclusive top 10 list.
Ritzy GQ magazine has put the traditional Old Fashioned Fish N Chips alongside swish seafood eateries at swanky addresses at Paddington, Mosman and Bondi.
The shop, at the corner of Alfred St and McIntosh Rd, has been serving up meals to locals, and those in the know, across the northern beaches for more than 20 years.
In the GQ article headlined “Where to get Sydney’s best fish & chips”, published online on Monday, the influential style magazine said Old Fashioned Fish N Chips was in the list of the “10 most iconic takeaways making Fish & Chips a destination meal”.
“Sydney’s famous seafood will always be a highlight of the city’s cuisine, and in no place is that more apparent than the veritable banquet of good Fish & Chip shops available up and down the Harbour City.” the article said.
The GQ judges said the modest Narraweena eatery “remains a timeless northern beaches hotspot”.
They said it focused “on doing the classics with relentless consistency and quality”.
When the Manly Daily told owners Nick and Mary Christofis, who live at North Narrabeen, that their shop was on the list, they were completely surprised.
Mr Christofis, who comes from four generations of milk bar and fish and chip operators of Greek heritage, started his first business in the CBD at the Mid-City Centre in 1982 and has owned a number of businesses including another one, the Daily Catch, at Narraweena.
“My methods haven’t changed. I’m still doing what I learned from my folks. Keep it simple.”
Mrs Christofis agreed.
“We do things the traditional way,” she said. “We make our own potato scallops, we cook the thicker-style chips and we don’t put any fancy sauces and things like avocado on our burgers.
“The customers, who come from as far away as Mona Vale, Frenchs Forest and Manly Vale tell us it reminds them of when they were young.”
