An leading obesity researcher has written a new book based on science with six simple steps for women wanting to lose weight, including eating your main meal with chopsticks.
Dr Nick Filler, of Collaroy, has been running the clinical research program at the Boden Institute, Charles Perkins Centre in the University of Sydney for the past decade.
He outlines his plan in his new book Interval Weight Loss for Women, a guide specifically for women at different stages of life.
“It looks at the weight struggle that comes with transition to adulthood, pregnancy and menopause — including the hormonal changes associated with weight gain, and what new research shows we should be doing in 2020 when it comes to weight loss,” Dr Fuller said.
He emphasised his plan was not a diet and did not include calorie counting, depriving yourself of food, weighing out portions or cutting out any foods or alcohol.
The main advice was not to lose weight month after month, but to lose weight for one month, then maintain the weight loss for a month before losing weight again.
Dr Fuller said this technique called interval weight loss works by tricking the body into resetting its ideal weight.
He said most diets fail because our bodies are tuned to a set point and once banned foods are reintroduced, the weight goes back on.
Other tips include:
Swapping processed foods for nature’s treats, such as fresh fruit and sodawater and lime.
Filling your plate with a variety of colours and eat more not less
Use chopsticks to eat your evening meal, to help you eat mindfully
Incorporate more movement into your daily routine
And turn off all devices and try reading before bed
Dr Fuller, who worked on TV show Honey We’re Killing The Kids, said the idea was not a diet but a lifestyle change based on science.
He said he had helped hundreds of people lose weight this way.
