Ella Letchford

Hi my name is Ella Letchford and I’m really excited to be the school captain in 2021. My job is to make this school the best it can be and I know it’s already awesome but there is always room for improvement!

I have always wanted to be the school caption but now that I think about it everyone can be the captain. From helping someone up when they have fallen over and putting rubbish in the bin if you see it on the playground. I love every part of this school and I’m so privileged to be able to be the captain and of course work with the other amazing leaders who are there to help everyone.

Thank you MVPS for everything you have ever done for me, now it’s my time to repay you.

I’m very grateful and excited to be school captain and I am going to try and make this school the best as possible! Some ideas I have, are to bring back the chicken nuggets at the canteen and help the environment by trying to arrange a couple of sea bins in the harbour.

I will strive to make good decisions and I’m very excited about running school assemblies, going on camp and working with the other prefects and leaders. If I see rubbish on the ground, I’ll pick it up and if a kid has fallen over, I will help them up.

I love sport and I have been the Athletics Champion for 2 years and I’m going for the third one this year. Other sports that I love to play include cricket, rugby, touch, surfing, swimming, sailing and many more.

I have been here since kindy and I have been waiting for this last year to come - so why not make it the best!

At St Mary’s we believe leadership is the process of motivating, inspiring and empowering others to achieve a common goal. All students in Year 6 are members of different leadership teams - Environment, Sports, Library/IT, Community, Mission and Pastoral care/Wellbeing - as the school recognises that we all have the capacity to lead in different ways such as engaging others, having innovative thoughts, motivating others, encouraging people and organising activities to completion.

As the leaders of St Mary’s for 2021 we aim to:

Uphold school values so that our school environment is a safe and happy place for everyone

Be a role model for other students

Recognise the needs of our school and our community

Suggest improvements for the school and its community

In our leadership teams we will work with our staff mentors to provide the school community with a clear idea about what we are trying to achieve, and communicate these ideas to the school community so that we can work together to achieve it.

As individuals we hope to develop personal capabilities within a growth mindset such as;

honesty

respect

compassion and respect for others

communication

collaboration and teamwork

problem solving, innovation and creativity

service

confidence and courage

commitment

responsibility

These are the values that will help us to thrive in life.

During 2021, we are looking forward to being able to do many of the things that last year’s leaders sadly missed out on. The big highlight for the year in Year 6 is our trip to Canberra in August. Each week we look forward to being with our Kindergarten buddies which is one of the best things about being leaders. We are also excited about the different sporting carnivals during the year such as Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country. Our biggest hope is that everyone gets the COVID vaccine and that life gets back to normal soon!

We are looking forward to 2021 as a year that is filled with new learning opportunities, friends and ideas. St Cecilia’s has a vibrant learning environment where every single student feels included and most importantly has a fun time learning. As school captains this year, we are proud to represent students, teachers and the school community. St Cecilia’s has always been an amazing school where you can be comforted if you feel sad or hurt yourself and also reach your full learning potential. Over the past 6 years that we have been at this school, we have always wanted to serve our school community. In this 7th year, we hope that we can do just this and continue to shape the future of our school as a friendly place for future learners.

Our School captains want to strive to be the best role models for younger students they can be.

They feel their job is to be there to help anyone who is hurt or lonely and support them with their friendship.

They also believe it’s important to care for their school environment, making sure people don’t litter and everyone is responsible and safe for the school grounds and school property.

They would like to teach other students about being safe, respectful and responsible friends and learners. They believe that together we can all make a happy school community .

In 2021 Mater Maria is putting a greater emphasis on our house cup. As the leaders of the college, we aim to use the house cup as a platform to encourage academic growth, extra-curricular activities and service to the community. As the primary initiative for 2021, the house cup is shifting from a physical and sports-based trophy to a more balanced system, awarding physical, academic and extra-curricular involvement. This initiative from the our fully inclusive Student Representative Council has been supported by Mr Reicher and the top 200 points contributors will be invited to a special excursion decided by the students themselves. We intend to use the house cup to promote competition and friendly rivalry within Mater Maria. Our vision is to change the mindsets of students to do anything and everything they can to help contribute to the house cup. Having such a historical prestige attached to the houses, students are not only competing for bragging rights, but for the honour of representing significant people in the history of Mater Maria.
