Coronavirus: Australia could soon reach the pandemic peak

Only one postcode on the northern beaches has escaped COVID-19 so far.

The 2105 postcode, which takes in Scotland Island, Church Point, Elvina Bay and Lovett Bay remains coronavirus free.

The affluent Palm Beach’s 2108 postcode, until recently the other suburb with no cases, now has one, according to the latest health data.

Meanwhile trouble spots Manly, with 20 cases, and Dee Why, with 16, have stabilised with no new cases in the past couple of days.

This week the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian pleaded with residents from the Manly and Dee Why areas to seek testing if they have symptoms after some cases were locally acquired with no known source.

Overall there are 145 cases across the Northern Beaches local government area, 19 of which were contracted by an unknown source.

Meanwhile, Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan has sent a strong message about social distancing this Easter.

It comes as police warned they would be out targeting all non-essential travel and the council shut Manly, Shelly, North Steyne, Queenscliff and Dee Why beaches to swimmers due to the areas being hotspots for the community transmission of COVID-19.

They won’t be reopened until after the long weekend. Many benches and tables have also been taped off to discourage people from sitting down.

“We are sending a message: Don’t come for a family day out or a picnic at our beaches over Easter, they are closed,” he said.

“We are asking our community to follow the advice, stay home and if you must use the beach, use it for exercise only and move on.

“The health and safety of our community and our staff are at the heart of everything we are doing.”
