Northern Beaches Hospital has launched the “ultimate luxury birthing service” for private-paying mummies, with post baby pampering including gourmet food snacks such as buddha bowls and staff available to whisk away crying babies.
This week the hospital opened its new Well Baby Nursery, in response to feedback from private clients.
The nursery is staffed 24/7 to allow mums a break to catch up on sleep, have a rest or make a few calls.
The service will not be available to those on the public maternity ward, where the philosophy is very different, and where midwives encourage mums to keep their babies close to them as much as possible.
On the private ward, gourmet snacks including fresh buddha bowls, salads and noodle boxes are also available as well as chef-designed main meals.
The snacks are stocked in the fridge so mums can eat at a time that suits them.
Midwives are also available to mums day and night during their stay, to assist with breastfeeding or settling babies and also to support mums as they get to know their little ones.
The hospital’s launch of the “ultimate luxury birthing service” comes just a couple of weeks after CEO Andrew Newton said he wanted to let people on the northern beaches know that the “hospital was open for business” and not to drive past to get their healthcare elsewhere.
NBH Midwifery Unit Manager, Amanda Must confirmed the new service model would offer luxury not previously available on the peninsula.
“Truly Northern Beaches Hospital’s maternity is about as good as it gets,” Mrs Must said.
“We listen to what mums tell us they want and, excuse the pun, try to deliver every time.
“While we are here for local mums and families, we are already starting to see women travel from outside the beaches to birth here, which confirms that we are providing a fantastic service.
“The facilities and accommodation speak for themselves, and of course the clinical care is exceptional.
“What we also turn our attention to is customer service and making sure mums feel supported throughout their entire stay with us. Nothing should be too much trouble.”
Fiona Allsop, Director of Nursing added that more changes are being planned for the private maternity ward, to enhance the service for new mums.
