Northern beaches: Great Mackerel Beach landslip, floods and trees down, with more to come

More stormy weather is predicted for the northern beaches which has already seen a landslip, roads closed, power cuts and multiple trees falling on houses and cars this week.

SES volunteers and police will travel by barge to Great Mackerel Beach on Wednesday to try and save properties following a dramatic landslip which destroyed a home.

Residents from 18 properties had to be evacuated overnight on Sunday after a house was destroyed, two others were damaged and others were put at risk.

People were allowed to return to all but six of the properties on Tuesday.

It comes as some parts of the northern beaches have seen more than 100mm of rainfall in the last few days, with more heavy rain predicted.

Flash flooding on Monday caused the closure of the Wakehurst Parkway in both directions, as well as Oxford Falls Rd, while many homes lost power.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted the northern beaches will get another battering on Thursday, with up to 30mm falling. Wednesday could see up to 10mm of rainfall.

Helen Reid, meteorologist at the BOM NSW, said the peninsula will see more rain until at least Saturday.

While it may just escape the worst of it tomorrow, up to 30mm could fall on Thursday.

“Everyone should be on their guard,” Ms Reid said.
“Significant rainfall is expected and a possible thunderstorm on Thursday.”

She said with soil already saturated even tomorrow’s rainfall could cause problems.

A spokeswoman for the SES warned residents across the peninsula to prepare for more storm damage and not to drive through flood water.

“The advice from Bureau of Meteorology is that we are in a bit of a lull, but that there is a chance of severe storms,” the spokeswoman said.

“We would like people to take it nice and easy on the roads.

“If the weather does get wild do not drive, walk or ride through flood water.

“You could put the safety of you and your family at risk.”

The spokeswoman said multiple trees have fallen on the northern beaches in the past couple of days, including one on a roof of a home in The Crescent, North Narrabeen, at 8am today.

At around 2am this morning a 10m tree fell across a driveway at Newport, taking down power lines.

Yesterday a 12-18ft branch fell on a car blocking the driveway of a home in Tiayul Rd, North Narrabeen.

In total the Warringah Pittwater SES crew have attended 19 jobs in the north of the peninsula since Friday evening. They include two at Avalon Beach and others at Killarney Heights, Duffys Forest, Allambie Heights and Warriewood, as well as one on Scotland Island.

Yesterday residents at Great Mackerel Beach were evacuated to safety after a landslip caused severe damage to one house and threatened others.

A spokeswoman for SES NSW told the Manly Daily volunteers, along with police, helped with the evacuation by boat, as the area is not accessible by road.

“They were all taken to friends and family,” the spokeswoman said.

“Tomorrow we will be heading out on a barge with police to put up some temporary fencing around the houses.”

She also recommended that people remove loose items around their properties before the next storm tomorrow and to check that their roof is in good repair and the gutters are clear.

If you need help contact SES on 132500 or if it is a life threatening incident call Triple-0.
