The northern beaches will be among the first to benefit from the State Government’s Dine and Discover voucher program to support local businesses impacted by the Christmas lockdown.
A number of businesses were forced to close down over what would have been the busiest period of the year.
According to government officials, the pilot program is set to be rolled out in February, pending on NSW Health advice.
Other areas which will be part of the trial include the Sydney CBD, Broken Hill and The Rocks.
The Dine and Discover program will grant every adult four $25 vouchers, which can be used in hospitality, arts and tourism.
“The sooner we can get on top of this outbreak and ease restrictions the better it will be for the local economy,” NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said.
“Encouraging people to support local businesses in a safe way through the Dine & Discover program will provide an important boost for the region after a tough Christmas.”
Customer Services Minister Victor Dominello explained how it would make a difference to the local economy.
“It’s designed to support small businesses by encouraging people to spend local,” Mr Dominello said.
“By including the Northern Beaches in the trial it will ensure we fast track stimulus spending at a time when they need it most.”
The program was unveiled in the November state budget.
Manly Business Chamber President Charlotte Rimmer said the community were supportive of the Dine and Discover program.
“We’d love these vouchers to be fast tracked so we can get cash stimulus. Northern beaches businesses have lost December and January revenue,” Mr Rimmer said.
“If they have just rent deferral, how will they get through to winter? That’s a major concern.
“Some ideas we’ve put forward are potential cash grants and the possibility of a Job Keeper 3.0. Also rent relief, marketing support and initiatives to encourage international students back to the area.”
It comes as the Premier prepares to roll out a financial support package for businesses after local MPs met with northern beaches businesses for a feedback session last weekend.
It’s anticipated the NSW Small Business Commissioner will continue the consultation process with northern beaches business owners next week.
“It’s important we tailor support to those most in need and the Small Business Commissioner will be working with businesses on the Northern Beaches from next week,” Finances and Small Business Minister Damien Tudehope said.
“We heard from local business leaders on the weekend and first and foremost, businesses will benefit when we are able to lift restrictions which hopefully is very soon.”
It’s rumoured the financial support package for businesses could be ready to roll out as soon as Australia Day.
