A councillor has taken home a major honour at the 12th annual Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government.

Roslyn Harrison, who represents Frenchs Forest ward on Northern Beaches Council, was the joint winner of the Elected Representative from a Metropolitan Council category, sharing the honour with Liverpool City Council’s Wendy Waller.

Mother-of-three Cr Harrison works as a primary school teacher having previously worked in various government departments for 20 years.

She has also been president of Northern Beaches Multiple Birth Association, Forestville Public School Parents and Citizens Association and has sat on numerous northern beaches committees in the past couple of decades.

Shelley Hancock, the Minister for Local Government, paid tribute to all the winners and finalists at the function out of NSW Parliament House last week.

“All the winners of this year’s awards have broken through barriers, led and encouraged other women as well as tackled some of the complex issues facing communities through creativity and innovation,’’ she said.

“They have all been a shining light, leading the way for their respective Councils.”

Jonathan O’Dea, State MP for Davidson, was also at the awards night and paid tribute to Cr Harrison.

“Cr Harrison has an impressive track record driving and completing projects, which includes

upgrading of playing fields, constructing the Dee Why Police Youth Citizens Club and revamping of community assets such as a theatre and library,” he said.

“Cr Harrison has also pushed for more women in management and successfully advocated for the formation of the Northern Beaches Council Women’s Network, which is run and organised by junior female staff.”
