Northern beaches surfer Jordy Lawler has established himself as the future of surfing in Australia after winning the Sydney Surf Pro, which featured Kelly Slater — and he wasn’t about to let trolls take the gloss off his big win.
Lawler, of North Narrabeen, edged out in-form Brazilian Jadson Andre at Manly Beach on Sunday to claim the biggest win of his young career.
“I don’t know if it has set in yet — it seems like a dream right now,” he told the Manly Daily on Monday.
“It’s so much stress gone (now) because my whole entire life is devoted to training and surfing every day in terrible conditions... it has finally paid off.
“It’s a huge relief — and to do it at home is incredible.”
Lawler, 23, was buoyed by the support of family, friends and a vocal crew from North Narrabeen Boardriders on his way to victory.
Despite this, some online trolls targeted Lawler’s Instagram account following the win.
Asked how he felt about it, the young gun boarder said the negative comments only served to motivate him even more going forward.
“I love them, it fuels the fire a bit,” he said.
“To me, if you’re doing something right you’re going to get those comments.
“I just don’t really think about it.
“Keep ‘em coming if they want — it’s all good.”
Lawler said he was confident the big win would help further launch him closer to his goal of competing on the Championship Tour (CT).
“I will do anything to get on that CT,” he said.
“If it means flying around the world, I’m going to do it.
“To have a breakthrough like this is incredible.
“It’s game-on now.”
Lawler also praised his coach, Matt Cattle.
“He pretty much did it for me,” he said.
“We have been working so much to get a good result and he spends hours and hours on the beach for me — he is an incredible person.”
