A man who was savagely bashed with a baseball bat and then pepper sprayed in his eyes during a robbery outside his northern beaches home may need plastic surgery to repair a terrible injury to his face
Carlo Trimboli, 46, was struck in the head, body and legs with the bat when he was ambushed in his own driveway by two men wearing balaclavas as he got out of his car at North Balgowlah on Saturday night.
The attack, as he went to open the boot at 6.10pm, left with a shattered left cheekbone as well as extensive bruising and swelling.
His wife and four young children were in the house at the time.
The masked men made off with Mr Trimboli’s work bag containing a laptop and other items. Police said the thieves grabbed an amount of cash, but Mr Trimboli said he did not have a large amount of cash with him.
Mr Trimboli had just returned to his home on Yamba St after working at his business, Samson’s, a wholesale greengrocer business at the Sydney Markets at Flemington.
The popular and respected businessman, who also does volunteer charity work as chairman of the Sydney Markets Foundation, told the Manly Daily on Monday that he believed the assault was premeditated.
He said the men either followed him to his home or were waiting for him to arrive home before they struck.
After grabbing the greengrocer’s bag the robbers fled on foot towards Coramba St.
As part of investigation, detectives are looking into whether the robbers had any link to the Sydney Markets.
“Maybe they though I might have had some takings from work, but I don’t take them home with me.
“It’s a bit weird.
“It was obviously premeditated.
Mr Trimboli said during the assault one of the robbers asked the other “did you get what you’re looking for?”.
“They took my business bag, which had my laptop in it. There was not much in it at all.”
The thieves did not steal Mr Trimboli’s wallet.
“I just hope the detectives find the culprits.”
Mr Trimboli was taken by ambulance to Northern Beaches Hospital. He was discharged on Sunday.
On Monday afternoon Mr Trimboli; I was seeing a specialist about the facial fracture.
“They are checking to see if there is any eye damage, anything like that.
“I’ll be seeing a plastic surgeon at the end of the week for a check.
He said he was told by doctors that if does not chew solid food, does not blow his nose and tried not to sneeze, the injury may heal itself.
“What do you do.”
Acting Northern Beachs Police Area Command crime manager Michael Keegan said detectives were making inquiries.
“We urge anyone who may have witnessed any thing to please come forward to Northern Beaches Detectives or contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000,” Acting Inspector Keegan said.
“If anyone has Dashcam footage which may show something in Yamba and Coramba streets at North Balgowlah, please let us now.”
