A woman who was badly injured when she was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing has publicly thanked the northern beaches community for coming to her aid.
Nicole Feledy suffered a broken jaw and cheekbone, as well as a smashed eye socket, when she was struck at the intersection of Forest Way and Morgan Rd at Belrose.
Ms Feledy, 51, who grew up in the area, but now lives in Surfers Paradise, was visiting her parents Denis and Denise Feledy, who live at the Glenaeon retirement village, while on a work trip to Sydney.
At about 5.40pm on Tuesday, August 20, the schoolteacher arrived back in Belrose on Forest Coach Lines’ number 271 bus after meetings in the city.
After getting the green pedestrian light, she walked onto the crossing on Forest Way, but just before reaching the central median, she was hit by a Honda Jazz allegedly being driven by a 73-year-old woman from St Ives, who was turning right from Morgan Rd.
Ms Feledy’s father Denis said his daughter told him she remembers seeing the small silver car out of the corner of her eye just before it hit her.
“Nicole was able to get her hands out in front of her, but her head hit the bonnet,” he said. “She didn't even get half way across the road.
“The Forest bus driver, who saw it happen, jumped out to help her. There was a doctor there too and a group of people all came over to help her.”
Mr Feledy said a woman used his daughter’s mobile phone to contact him.
“When I got down there I saw two ambulances, three or four police cars and a group of people trying to help.
“It was phenomenal”.
In a post to the Frenchs Forest, Belrose, Davidson & Forestville Community Group Facebook page, Ms Feledy said she wanted to say a “massive thank you to all the kind people who stopped”.
“From the L271 bus driver who saw everything, the off duty firey and doctor who kept me still, to the gentle ladies who phoned the police, ambulance and mum and dad.”
Ms Feledy also praised the treatment she received in the Emergency department at Northern Beaches Hospital.
“Thank you also to the efficient, calming and positive ambulance people and police,” she wrote.
“A massive thank you to the doctors and nurses at The Northern Beaches Hospital. Their professionalism, compassion and care was awesome, not only for myself, but for mum and dad who were, as you can imagine, extremely concerned.”
Ms Feledy did not need surgery for her injuries, but was not allowed to fly back to Queensland at the weekend. She had to catch a train and a coach.
Mr Feledy said he would make a complaint to Roads and Maritime Services about the amount of time the green pedestrian light is showing at the intersection.
Inquiries by Northern Beaches Police are continuing.
