A NORTHERN beaches school has made it onto the most improved list for its Naplan results for the third year running.

Northern Beaches Secondary College Balgowlah Boys Campus was highlighted yesterday by the government body compiling the results.

Balgowlah Boys deputy principal Ian James said the school was definitely “punching above its weight”. “It’s very satisfying to see these results but it has been a lot of work to get here,” he said.

“It speaks volumes about the teaching, especially as we are a comprehensive, not a selective.”

The success of Balgowlah Boys in both its Naplan and HSC exams, has resulted in an increase in demand for places. This year the school had its biggest Year 7 enrolment to date, with 200 boys starting in January.

Mr James warned the school was “crammed full” and next year it would be able to take only 160 or 170 Year 7 boys.

He said the catchment area would also shrink and only go as far as South Curl Curl to the north and this side of the Spit Bridge. Mr James said saying ‘no’ to parents wanting a place for their son had become “one of their biggest stresses”.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority which runs the Federal Government’s My School website, published all the Naplan results for individual schools yesterday. It does not release a full list of high-achieving schools.

But the Manly Daily has analysed the data for all northern beaches high schools — looking at the Year 7 and Year 9 Naplan results for reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy — and found the public selective school, Northern Beaches Secondary College Manly Campus, came top.

Second, was St Luke’s Grammar School, and third the German International School Sydney in Terrey Hills. Balgowlah Boys came tenth in our list.
