A main northern beaches road was closed on Wednesday morning after a truck engine caught fire.

Highway Patrol attended the scene at just after 8am and shut Mona Vale Rd in both directions between Powderworks Rd and Kimbriki Rd in Ingleside, after motorists attempted to drive through thick smoke.

Traffic was diverted to other routes.

Insp Danielle Emerton from the Northern Beaches Local Area Command said no-one was injured.

She said the fire started in the engine of the Volvo tipper truck which came to a stop 100m east of Kimbriki Rd.

It had a trailer on the back full of concrete rubble.

She said the fire brigade attended and pumped out the diesel.

“The traffic was diverted for about 45 minutes,” she said.

The truck has been removed for inspection.

Terrey Hills RFS put up a picture of the burnt out truck on its Facebook page urging people to avoid the area.

The road was open in both directions at just before 10.30am.
