A teenage boy dragged unconscious from the surf at a popular Sydney beach has been brought back to life by lifeguards.

The boy, 15, was not breathing when he was pulled from the water at Mona Vale Beach at about 11am on Wednesday after the lifeguards were alerted to a swimmer in distress.

While the lifeguards began CPR, an ambulance and the CareFlight rescue helicopter were called.

The Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre at Belrose was made aware of the unfolding incident at 11.03am.

A SLSNSW spokesman said the teenager was pulled from the water by his friends before lifeguards immediately started performing CPR ahead of the arrival of paramedics.

He regained consciousness and began to breathe before NSW Ambulance personnel arrived.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive officer, Steve Pearce, praised the quick response from Northern Beaches lifeguards and said the incident was a timely reminder of the importance of swimming at a patrolled location.

“With hazardous surf predicted over the coming days this incident reminds us of the value that our volunteer lifesavers and lifeguards bring to the community,” he said.

“We wish the young man a speedy recovery and are pleased that lifeguards were able to respond so quickly and deliver the appropriate first aid to help him regain consciousness.”

The CareFlight crew landed behind the Mona Vale Surf Club before a specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance paramedics provided treatment.

The teenager was flown to the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick in a stable condition.
