Around 80 northern beaches cricketers will be tackling another sporting challenge this weekend — the Pub2Pub fun run.

The Manly Warringah District Cricket Club — known as the Waratahs — have signed up juniors, seniors and everyone in between.

They are currently the biggest team in the race.

Club Community Manager, Phill Edwards, said they had members as young as 13 up to 65 taking part in race on Sunday which starts at Dee Why beach and finishes at Newport.

The cricketers will be raising money for the Avalon Youth Hub, which is run by youth homeless organisation The Burdekin Association. The hub offers a place for young people to get support and counselling.

Mr Edwards said supporting the community was important in developing players.

“While our club is primarily about playing cricket, we also see it as an opportunity to help develop young players into adulthood, being able to take responsibility for their own actions and understanding that some people’s lives are not as privileged as ours,” he said.

The team includes Mr Edward’s high profile sons, Mickey and Jack, the first brothers since twins Steve and Mark Waugh in 2004 to be selected for NSW.

Among the cricketers running the 13km course are a big group of teenagers including Lauren Muriti, 13, and Caitlin du Perez, 14. Not to be outdone, senior cricketers club stalwart Simon Lyon, 65, and Ross Denny, 57, will tackle the same distance.

In fact, more than half the team will be running the original 13km course option from Dee Why Beach to Newport. A third of the Team will run the 6km from Warriewood while the rest will start at Mona Vale and complete the 3km course.

The entire team will run in the club’s blue Manly Cricket training shirts.

The club has also paid for all team registration fees.
