Captain Cook Cruises has announced it will cease operating its fast ferry service between Manly and Barangaroo, revealing that the venture is “not viable to continue to operate”.
In a statement sent to commuters on Tuesday the company said “it is disappointed to announce the closure” after it first launched two years ago.
“Under significant cost pressure our endeavours to operate the Manly to Barangaroo service has placed a significant financial burden on the company and we regret to advise that we will cease operations after September 13,” the statement read.
“The service has received strong praise and whilst it has continued to grow in patronage the path to profitability has been too slow to continue operations.
“We wish to thank our loyal customers and hardworking crew for their support.”
The company said all unused ticketing App fares will be refunded following the closure of the service.
Manly MP James Griffin said he was “bitterly disappointed by SeaLink’s (the operator of Captain Cook Cruises) decision to end the service”.
He also vowed to look into other companies who make take up the service, now that it has been vacated by SeaLink.
“I am working closely with Transport for NSW and other potential operators to secure a sustainable future for this important ferry service,” Mr Griffin said.
“For a number of years I worked at Barangaroo and know the importance and value of a direct service from Manly.
“The growth in the Barangaroo precinct would suggest a good opportunity for another operator to take on this route.”
The Manly Fast Ferry company is still operating a weekday commuter service between Manly and Darling Harbour, via Milsons Point and Pyrmont Bay.
