Manly, Sydney Rd: Man charged with biting cop during northern beaches arrest
A police officer needed hospital treatment for an alleged bite wound he received during the dramatic arrest of a man outside busy northern beaches’ eateries.

A man allegedly bit a northern beaches’ police officer so hard that he had to be taken to hospital.
The constable, and two other uniformed officers, were trying to arrest Jake Gregory Smith, 31, after he allegedly intimidated a Manly shopkeeper with a cigarette lighter after he was accused of shoplifting.
Police alleged in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday that Mr Smith, from Wollongong, was at the King of the Pack tobacconist on Sydney Rd, on Saturday at about 9.30am when he allegedly walked out of the shop without paying for items.
When he was confronted by a staff member on Sydney Rd, Mr Smith returned to the shop where he allegedly picked up a lighter and lit the flame near display shelves before he allegedly stole a nitrous gas cylinder.
A short time later Mr Smith was stopped by three police officers near the outdoor dining area for the InSitu restaurant and Ground Zero Cafe.
During his dramatic arrest, he allegedly bit a male constable on the forearm as he was wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.
The constable went to Northern Beaches Hospital for treatment.
Mr Smith was taken to Manly Police Station, where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, larceny, attempt stalk/intimidate intend fear of harm (personal), hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, and breach of bail.
He was refused bail to appear in Manly Local Court for mention on January 19.
No plea has been entered.
