A man suffered horrific injuries after he was impaled on a metre-long iron bar at a Sydney construction site today.
The man, 36, was speared through his back, chest and arm after falling backwards about two metres onto the bar at Belrose at about 1.30pm.
Emergency personnel had to leave a section of the bar, used to reinforce concrete, inside the construction worker while they drove him in an ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital.
The CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter specialist doctor and paramedics were flown to a park near the construction site for a new 104-bed aged care facility where they joined NSW Ambulance paramedics to treat the man.
Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters cut the pole, from the front and back, while the medical teams worked to treat and stabilise the man.
“CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic assessed the patient’s condition and prepared him for transport to hospital with the shortened bar still in his body,” a CareFlight spokesman said.
The man, who had to lie on his side, was taken by road ambulance, on his side, in a stable condition to the hospital under ongoing observation from CareFlight’s clinical team.
