Police, with guns drawn, intercepted a person matching the description of the man on his way to the ferry wharf. He was forced to the ground, but later released without charge.

The report sparked a major police operation after it was believed the man who allegedly made the threats had boarded a ferry headed to Circular Quay.

Despite a number of officers waiting for the ferry, the man could not be found when the vessel docked.

Police said no firearm was sighted by the public.
