IT was the most talked about $5 raffle prize ever — a $4m luxury beach house in Sydney’s north. But who won?

The draw today has revealed the owner of the brand new fully furnished three-level, four-bedroom house, with water views stretching from Freshwater to Curl Curl is from North Manly, who spent $200 on RSL Art Union tickets.

No other details of the winner have yet been revealed.

“There’s no doubt the Freshwater draw is among the most popular we’ve ever run and interestingly, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of young punters from Sydney buying tickets,” said Tracey Bishop, from RSL Art Union.

It’s thought the raffle grabbed the imagination of people across Sydney because high property prices have made it impossible for many to break into the housing market.

The raffle proved to be particularly popular with peninsula residents living nearby with the majority of ticket holders from Dee Why, Freshwater, Allambie Heights, Manly and Balgowlah.

“More Australians than ever before are turning to prize home lotteries to have a chance at entering the housing market,” Ms Bishop said.

“The majority of our games this year have sold out and while there’s no doubt our prize homes

are a step up from the average quarter acre block, it’s not always luxury that ticket buyers are

chasing. Often all they want is the chance to own a property and call it home.”

The RSL Art Union survey also found what people want hasn’t changed that much in the past

60 years and the 1950s dream of a home in the suburbs with a hills hoist and a barbecue still

holds true for many Australians.

Around 56 per cent of respondents said the modern Australian dream was a home in the suburbs with a pool and a landscaped garden.

About one in five dream of a cosy townhouse close to major amenities like shopping, schools and health services while 14 per cent preferred an inner city apartment in a trendy precinct, close to restaurants, bars and entertainment.
