Diners at a popular northern beaches eatery had a lucky escape from injury after an out-of-control car mounted the footpath and hurtled towards them at lunchtime today.
The driver of a Mazda 3 hatchback suffered a medical episode in Wentworth St, Manly, before the car crossed to the wrong side of the road and struck a line of parked cars.
Witnesses said the car, driven by a woman aged about 70, smashed its way between two parked cars, including a luxury Mercedes and a small Renault van, before ending up against the window of Fusion Point Bar & Restaurant on the edge of Rialto Sq.
Restaurant manager, Johnny, said he had a full restaurant at the time.
“We heard a big crash and then saw the car up against the window,” Johnny said.
“Some of the girls went to help and told the lady to stay in the car and wait while we called the ambulance.
“It was lucky she didn’t come through the window or hit any pedestrians walking by.”
The woman was treated by a paramedic at the scene before she was taken, in a stable condition, by ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital.
Northern Beaches Police said it appeared the driver had suffered a medical episode before the incident.
