A learner driver hit speeds of 150km/h in a 60km/h zone in a desperate bid to out run police who wanted to pull him over for a random breath test.

Siosiua Kinahoi, 19, who had been drinking, sped dangerously away from the patrol car along a major road on Sydney’s northern beaches.

He eventually pulled his Subaru Forester 4WD over in North Manly after he was first spotted by police at 11.30pm on April 17 at nearby Brookvale.

Kinahoi won’t get a chance to take his driving test for sometime after Manly Local Court today banned him from getting behind the wheel for three years.

During the chase, Kinahoi rocketed through the 60km/h zone outside the Warringah Mall Westfield shopping centre at 150km/h.

Earlier, he sped through the intersection of Pittwater and Mitchell roads at 120km/h.

Kinahoi who pleaded guilty you a string of driving charges including police pursuit (not stop-drive dangerously); Special Category drink driving and; learner driver exceed speed by greater than 45km/h, was disqualified from holding a licence for three years.

He was convicted and also handed a Community Corrections Order to be of good behaviour for 12 months.

At the time of the offences Kinahoi was living at Narraweena. He now lives at Burwood.

A police facts sheet tendered to court said police tried to pull Kinahoi over while he was travelling north on Pittwater Rd, but he turned left into Victor Rd and drove into a residential driveway.

As police pulled up, the Subaru reversed out of the driveway and made its way back on to Pittwater Rd.

Police turned on their car’s lights and sirens, but the Subaru accelerated up to 120km/h in a 60km/h zone as it passed Brookvale Oval.

“The pursuit continued and at Warringah Mall, southbound, police were travelling at 150km/h in a 60km/h zone,” the facts sheet said.

Kinahoi almost lost control of the car before it came to a stop at a bus stop near Ankali Pl, North Manly.

He then got out of the car with his hands up and said: “I’m sorry” to police.

When he was asked why he did not pull over, Kinahoi replied: “I just wanted to die man, straight up, I just wanted to die”.

Police found empty alcohol containers in the car. He was breath tested and blew 0.028.

Kinahoi’s legal Aid solicitor told the court that he was the eldest of nine children and that his father had just had two major back operations that left him partially incapacitated.

She said that Kinahoi, who worked as a garbage collector, was bearing the burden of helping to provide for the family and was becoming depressed with his situation.

When sentencing Kinahoi Magistrate Michelle Goodwin acknowledged that he would be saddened by family circumstances, but must understand that he could have hurt himself, police and other road users.

Ms Goodwin also ordered that Kinahoi continue to attend counselling.
