A shirtless drink-driving hoon who sped away from police and crashed his ute into parked cars after officers saw him doing a lengthy burnout, has been sentenced in Manly Local Court.
Lincoln Mobbs, 18, was arrested when cornered in the backyard of a house in Wheeler Heights moments after making a desperate dash to escape the scene of a Sunday night crash in Kendal Cres.
The court heard on Thursday that Mobbs, of Baulkham Hills, “could have ended up in the morgue” rather than in front of a magistrate after crashing his ute on the night of December 13 last year.
Mobbs, who was only wearing a pair of shorts at the time, was chased by a resident and police when he used his shoulder to crash through a wooden side gate of the property.
He ended up with an injured wrist as well as a number of scratches and cuts to his face, neck, shoulders and chest.
Mobbs pleaded guilty to one count each of operate vehicle so driving wheels undergo loss of traction; not stop vehicle when directed to do so; no P plates; mid-range drink driving; not give particulars to other driver; destroy or damage property and; enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse.
In a facts sheet tendered to court police reported they had seen Mobbs, at about 8.20pm, loudly revving the engine of Holden ute in Veterans Pde at Wheeler Heights.
Police lost sight of Mobbs’ car as they did a U-turn to catch up to him. A short time later they saw him behind the wheel of the ute doing a 10-second “burnout” in Rose Ave.
The officers walked over to Mobbs’ car, but when they were about two metres away, he slowly drove away.
Police got pack in their car and turned on their lights and sirens and followed him into Berith St before Mobbs accelerated away and the police again lost sight of the vehicle.
But moments later Mobbs crashed into, and badly damaged a parked Toyota which was pushed into the side of parked Subaru Forester in Kendal Cres.
Mobbs jumped from his car and ran north along Kendal Cres, being chased by the resident and police. He then turned right into a private property and burst through the wooden side gate into the backyard.
“The accused hit the fence with such force that he knocked the gate off its hinges,” the police reported.
Mobbs then ran through the backyard but was quickly cornered by police and arrested.
He blew 0.131 at Manly police station.
Mobbs’ solicitor Ian Bryne told the court on Thursday that “fortunately for him nobody was hurt”.
“He’s realised today that while he’s ended up in court, he could have ended up in the morgue,” Mr Byrne said.
“He’s got the rounds of the kitchen off his family and his girlfriend.”
While sentencing Mobbs, Magistrate Bruce Williams told him that “Mr Bryne was right, you're a lucky man”.
Mr Williams said cars can become “lethal weapons” when driven badly.
“(They are) a tonne and a half of metal and don’t bend when you hit someone.”
Mobbs was convicted and fined a total of more than $2200 including $800 for mid-range drink driving and $500 for doing the burnout.
He was also disqualified from driving for six months.
